DescriptionA sermon draft with many corrections in a different hand. The first seven leaves are wanting. The sermon therefore opens as follows: ‘But they were told they must go through, The Gospell could not be preached but by them, and they could not preach it but by declaring them selves to be his servants […].’ The sermon advocates that his hearers ‘love one another’ (‘So I am now come to that which is I hope the business of this day that we Love one another’, f. 59r). On f. 61r, Dolben recommends that his audience ‘will at your Leisure Read over that Divine Sermon of his [i.e. Christ] upon the Mount’. He also recommends this on p. 17 of ‘A Sermon Preached before His Majesty’ (London, 1665).
Source of DataBritish Library Catalogue; Hannah Yip.
Other NoteAlthough no biblical verse is specified owing to the missing leaves, the present cataloguer conjectures that the sermon was based on John 13:34 owing to the recurrence of the words ‘Love one another’. The margins have been drawn in ink. Marginal annotations are minimal. There are several manicules (for example, on ff. 55r and 58r). The scribe is unknown. The sermon is written in a neat italic hand, with an example of blackletter on f. 55r. In places, the scribe has also imitated the roman font; see, for example, ff. 81r-82r. The sermon has been written on the rectos of the leaves only. The scribe has paginated these leaves, but the present cataloguer has followed the later, pencilled-in pagination for clarity. Languages used within the sermon include Greek. This manuscript would benefit from a comparison with Westminster Abbey Library, CB.105 (GEMMS-MANUSCRIPT-000906), which is written in Dolben’s hand. It is possible that the many corrections and insertions are written in his hand.
