DescriptionThis sermon is written within margins ruled in the gutter and header, in a neat, precise, small hand (the same hand responsible for the rest of the volume's contents). Because the "funerall speech" that follows the end of the sermon proper is almost certainly connected to the sermon, it is entered as part of this record. The two parts appear to be connected as the explication and application of a typical funeral sermon of the period, the application reserved for reflections on the subject's life and lessons to be gleaned from it. Assuming this is so, the sermon was preached at the funeral of Martyn Perse.
Source of DataJeanne Shami
Other NoteThe DWL cataloguer conjectures that the preacher might be either Thomas Purchase or his nephew Samuel Purchase, both of whose dates (d. ca. 1657-58) would be compatible with the date of this sermon. Precise date and location unknown.
