Contents NoteManuscript sermons from Wiltshire by an unidentified preacher. The text proceeds both forward and backward. Going forward (Part 1), the sermons are all dated 1651, except for the final sermon for which no year is given, but which also seems to be from 1651. Going backward (Part 2), the sermons are mostly dated 1651, except for two with preachings in 1657. Part 2 mostly consists of a series of nine sermons on Colossians 1:11. The volume also contains a list of books recommended by Dr. Hammond and two prayers, one for before and one for after study.
Material FeaturesThe sermons are in the same hand throughout the manuscript. Cross-throughs seem to come in the application sections, suggesting these are preacher’s drafts. The whole manuscript is unfoliated and unpaginated. The pages are narrowly ruled. Sermon passages are crossed through. Marginalia have been added later, mostly in different ink. Following the end of each sermon, signaled by “Amen.”, there are occasionally Biblical quotations, and quotations from theologians (e.g. Casaubon). The fly-leaf contains biblical texts and other commentary (e.g. Aquinas). In spaces between the sermon texts, theological sources are cited in Latin, English, and occasionally Greek.
