Contents NoteDiscussed in Potter and Simpson's edition of Donne's sermons, and in the notes to the forthcoming Oxford edition of Donne's sermons, where it is described as the Lothian manuscript. There is a later index of the sermons on p. 209 in pencil.
Material FeaturesThere are a number of letters from Jessop and Schomberg inserted into the front and a signature "Srs Wattas Livre frm 1820" on one of the first pages.
A leaf from this manuscript has been separated and held as MS 5768. This contains notes on baptism, perhaps connected with the three sermons on baptism (ff. 82-100). Notes with this leaf explain that Augustus Jessop removed it before giving the volume to the 9th Marquess of Lothian, and this leaf was give to the 11th Marquess by Dr Geoffrey Keynes in 1931.
ProvenancePresented to the 9th Marquess of Lothian, Schomberg Kerr, by Augustus Jessop in 1898. Jessop believed the volume to be "undoubtedly written by the hand of Dr Donne Dean of St Paul", as attested by a note in his hand at the beginning of the volume. Jessop thought that it would be fitting to give the manuscript to a descendent of Robert Ker, First Earl of Ancram, Donne's friend.
AcquisitionThe volume was presented to the NLS in 1950, part of a deposit from the Lothian family's library at Newbattle Abbey.
