Other NoteWilliam J. Carlton (1886-1973) was a Dickens scholar and authority on the history of shorthand. His book, Charles Dickens, Shorthand Writer (London, 1926), remains today the fullest and most authoritative study of Dickens’ career as a shorthand reporter. He published widely on aspects of Dickens’ early life and later years. Carlton was also the author of Timothy Bright, Doctor of Phisicke (London, 1911), Lawrence Steel: An Old-Time Quaker Stenographer (London, 1928), and Samuel Pepys, His Shorthand Books (London, 1933).
