Other NoteBenjamin Colman was born in Boston, MA on 19 October 1673. His influences included the Mather family. Colman graduated from Harvard in 1692. Three years later, he sailed for England but was captured en route by French pirates. Subsequently, he was ransomed, and he travelled to London, England. In 1699, Colman returned to Boston to take up a post at Brattle Street Church. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow in 1731. Colman invited George Whitefield to preach at various pulpits in Boston during the 1740s. He died in August 1747, aged seventy-four.
