Other NoteMatthew Wren was born on 23 December 1585 in London, the son of Francis Wren, painter-stainer. Matthew Wren attended Merchant Taylors' School and Pembroke College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1605 and proceeding M.A. on 2 July 1608. Wren was ordained deacon and priest on 20 January and 10 February 1611, respectively. From 1611 until 1614, he was vicar of Harston, Cambridgeshire, and from 1613 until 1615 he was vicar of Barton, Cambridgeshire. He was awarded the degree of B.D. in 1615, and in the same year, he became a household chaplain of Lancelot Andrewes, bishop of Ely, and was instituted to the rectory of Teversham, Cambridgeshire. In 1623, he was awarded the degree of D.D. and became a prebend of Winchester. Having been a Fellow of Pembroke since 1605, he then became Master of Peterhouse, Cambridge on 26 July 1625. In the 1630s, he progressed to become bishop of Hereford, Norwich and Ely. During the Civil Wars and Interregnum, he was imprisoned in the Tower; however, in the Restoration, he was restored to Ely. Wren died at Ely House in Holborn on 24 April 1667, and was buried in Pembroke College chapel on 11 May.
