Other NoteEric Robert Dalrymple Maclagan was born in London on 4 December 1879, the only son of William Dalrymple Maclagan, archbishop of York. He studied at Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Classics. In 1905, he became an assistant in the Department of Textiles, Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1909, he transferred to the Department of Architecture and Sculpture. Maclagan was transferred to the Foreign Office in 1916. Being fluent in French, he became head of the Ministry of Information's bureau in Paris in 1918. In 1919, he was appointed CBE. In 1924, Maclagan became director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, a post he held for twenty-one years. He was knighted in 1933, and appointed KVCO in 1945. He was also awarded honorary degrees at Birmingham (LL.D., 1944) and Oxford (D.Litt., 1945). He held a number of distinguished positions in his career, including a short period as Charles Eliot Norton Professor at Harvard and Vice-President of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Maclagan died on 14 September 1951 in Spain. He was buried at Bilbao.
