Other NoteSecond surviving son of Sir Jonathan Trelawny, second baronet, and his wife Mary (née Seymour) of Berry Pomeroy, Devon. His family had a long history of royalist sympathies, which burdened their estates with debts resulting from penalties imposed after the civil war. They were affiliated with the duke of York from the 1670s. Educated at Westminster School in 1663 and then at Christ Church, Oxford, in 1668. Graduated BA in 1672 and MA in 1675. Ordained as a priest on Christmas Eve in 1676. Appointed a royal chaplain-extraordinary in 1677. Given the rectory of St. Ive on 22 September, 1677, and then given the family living in South Hill on 4 October of the same year. He held both these livings until 1689. Became chaplain to Lord Conway. Inherited title of baronet in 1681. Named vice-admiral of south Cornwall in February 1682. Appointed Bishop of Bristol in 1685. Supported a petition of Sancroft and five other bishops against an order to read the declaration of indulgence in churches in 1688. All seven bishops put on trial by James II for their opposition; acquitted, but paid hefty legal fees. Translated to the bishopric of Exeter in 1689; then to the bishopric of Winchester in 1706, which he held until his death. Very loyal to his royal supporters and to the Church of England, but a jealous guard of his episcopal rights. Despite high church principles, used his electoral influence to support the Whigs. Died in 1721.
