DescriptionA lengthy sermon on Ephesians 4:4-6 on ‘the benefitts of unity’. The text commences: ‘Lord High Chancellor of England our Honourd Lord & Chancellor: for Dr John Fell his worthy Vicechancellor, for all the Drs, both the Proctors, & Governors of colledges & Halls; especially for the good estate of Dr Richard Baylie Deane of Sarum & Reverend President & Learned of St John Baptists Colledge, for the fellowes, scholars & other members of that society: that in that & all other places dedicate to Gods service, Religion & learning & whateuer is praiseworthy may flourish & abound’. Then a lengthy bidding prayer follows. Written out in full in a small hand with a lot of insertions and deletions. In places the text is difficult to decipher. In places the text is interrupted by Arabic passages (which, according to the Summary Catalogue, are of Bernard’s own theological treatises) which have been transcribed on the verso sides of a few folios. ff. 38-39 are blank. The sermon text appears to conclude on f. 43r with a final ‘AMEN’.
