Other NoteBernard was born in Northamptonshire and attended Merchant Taylor's school in London. He matriculated from St. John's College, Oxford in 1655, was made a fellow in 1658, and graduated BA in 1659 and MA in 1662. He became college reader in mathematics in 1663 and university proctor in 1667. He added theology to his studies in mathematics and Arabic, receiving a BD in 1668. Despite brief stints as rector, private chaplain, and tutor, he ultimately returned to Oxford as professor of astronomy until his death.
