Other NoteEdward Rainbow (Rainbowe) was born on 20 April 1608 at Blyton in Lindsay to Thomas and Rebecca Rainbow. He studied at Gainsborough, Peterborough (under John Williams), and Westminster School before matriculating from Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1623. Upon receiving a Wray scholarship in 1625, he migrated to Magdalene College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1627 and proceeding M.A. in 1630. He briefly served master of a school in Kirton in 1630 before moving to London and being ordained in 1632. He was appointed curate at the Savoy Chapel, but soon was recalled to Cambridge and was elected to a by-fellowship. He was made vicar of Childerley and dean of Magdalene in 1637; he became master of the college in 1642. Rainbow became rector of Great Easton, Essex, but was ejected from the position in 1650 for refusing to swear to the engagement. He accepted the living of Little Chesterford, Essex in 1652 and shortly after was made rector of Benefield in 1659. He was restored to his position of master of Magdalene at the Restoration. He became dean of Peterborough in 1661 before taking up the vice-chancellorship of Cambridge in late 1662. He resigned his preferments when he was consecrated bishop of Carlisle in 1664. He was known to be a great preacher and a pious and charitable man. He died on 26 March 1684 and was buried at Dalston church, survived by his wife Elizabeth (m. 1652, d. 1702).
