GEMMS: Gateway to Early Modern Manuscript Sermons
GEMMS IDGEMMS-MANUSCRIPT-001010
TitlePapers of Alexander Bisset
ShelfmarkMS. 1941 George Campell Sermons
Creation Date1689 -
Contents NoteThis appears to be a series of sermons on Psalms 45: 1, 2, 3, 4. An ornate title page gives the text of all four verses. There are breaks between the verses within the text (except between verses 2 and 3), but no breaks within the sermons on each verse, although these are too lengthy to be single sermons.
Material FeaturesLeather-bound octavo volume with remains of clasps. Note pasted to front cover dated Swansea 23 July 1875. Seal of “Royal Institution of South Wales” donating the volume to the Scottish Society of Antiquaries by George Francis, the volume having belonged to his brother, John Dettett Francis of Swansea (whose signature appears on the fron flyleaf). On the verso of the flyleaf is the inscription “Sermons of Mr Gorge [sic] Campbell which belongs to me Marie Mar Marie Maule Wrytten at Alloa 15 March 1689.” Sermons are beautifully and clearly written. Original page numbering. A later hand has made a few annotations in red pencil.
