GEMMS: Gateway to Early Modern Manuscript Sermons
GEMMS IDGEMMS-MANUSCRIPT-001836
TitleSermons, by various preachers ... c.1650-60.
ShelfmarkGB 247 MS Gen 438
Creation Dateca. 1658 -
Contents NoteContains 12 sermons preached in c.1658 by various preachers. The catalogue title for this MS suggests a date range of 1650-1660 but the only date given within the sermons is 1658. The first page of the MS contains notes in Latin and the name 'James Wodrow.' The first page in reverse (at back of the MS) is also signed 'Jacobus Wodrow.' The inscription reflects those in other MSS in the same collection, as do the names of the preachers - these all appear to be Wodrow's sermons notes, taken whilst he was a student at the University of Glasgow. The hand in this MS is slightly different to the preceding MSS (MS Gen 436 & 437) but the later date might explain this.
Material FeaturesA small leather bound notebook, the original ties are missing and the binding is damaged - the back cover is in particularly poor condition. However, the binding remains in place and the paper is in largely good condition, with minimal fraying and tears to the edges. The MS runs in two directions, the front has been taken to be the side with the archive label on the inside cover. There are page numbers which are original to the MS, with a total of 180 pages.
