TitleFuneral Sermons by Joseph Caryl
ShelfmarkMS 28.6
Creation Dateca. 1656 - 1662
Contents NoteThis is a beautiful, fairly slim volume bound in leather, gilt tooled and edged, formerly with clasps, containing unpublished funeral sermons by the Revd. Joseph Caryl (1602-1673) for members of the Burrowe or Burrowes family, with some other pieces. The sermons include several for children, a fairly uncommon practice at their funerals. In all, there are four sermons, additional "exhortations", a funeral elegy and an acrostic poem.
Material FeaturesThe volume is handsomely written, with title pages painted on vellum with symbolic effigies, etc. The volume has ff. 72, of which ff. 1-3, 70-72 are blank. The pages are ruled with red borders; the right-hand margin is closely cropped.
Associated Peoplemanuscript owner - Bellamy, Mary
ProvenanceThe signature of "Mary Bellamy" is on f. 2a. At the end of the last piece in the volume are the legends ‘J.H. fecit’ and ‘E.H. scr.’ presumably referring to the last items, unless J.H. painted the title pages and E.H. wrote out the whole. This last suggestion is that of the DWL cataloguer.
