GEMMS: Gateway to Early Modern Manuscript Sermons
GEMMS IDGEMMS-MANUSCRIPT-000642
TitleCommonplace Book of Unknown Authorship
ShelfmarkMS II.e.4
Creation Dateca. 1642 - 1650
Contents NoteThe book was apparently begun as a commonplace book with an alphabetical list of topics, but the writer has apparently then turned the volume into a collection of religious texts, beginning with a discussion of proper preparation for the sacrament, followed by a number of sermons and expositions and disputations. One of the texts is John Cotton's "Briefe Exposition of the Whole Book of Canticles" (Wing C6410) first printed in 1642, which indicates the volume was begun after that date.
Material FeaturesLeather-bound volume with tape fastenings. Modern table of contents pasted on first page. Text scratched out at the top of the first page may include a name. Volume is unpaginated and unfoliated.
