Other NoteThe seventh and youngest son of James Kirk, minister of Aberfoyle, and Elizabeth Carkettle. He graduated MA from Edinburgh University on 19 July 1661 and then studied at St Andrews. He became the minister of Balquhidder on 8 November 1664 and from 1667 - 1688 he was clerk to the synod of Dunblane. He married Isabel, Daugher of Sir Colin Campbell of Mochaster, on 14 January 1678 and they had two sons, one (Colin d. 1725) surviving to majority. Isabel died on 25 December 1680. His parish was entirely Gaelic speaking and Kirk authored the first complete metrical psalter in Gaelic "Psalma Dhaibhidh an meadrachd" (1684). In 1685 he was appointed to his father's old charge. He would then become involved in helping James Kirkwood distribute the New Testament and Catechism in Gaelic in the highlands. In 1688, Kirk went to London for 8 months in order to supervise the printing of the full Bible in Gaelic, providing a glossary and updating the Classical Gaelic to create a version that could be understood by a highland readership. In London, Kirk met Bishop Edward Stillingfleet, a seventh son who would go on to have seven sons and so was interested in folklore. Kirk wrote for Stillingfleet's wife, "The secret commonwealth, or, An essay on the nature and actions of the subterranean... invisible people heretofore going under the name of faunes and fairies, or the lyke, among the low country Scots" (1691) which would be published in several versions. He married again, to Margaret Campbell, the couple would have a son, Robert, and a daughter, Marjorie, who was born after Kirk died on 14 May 1692.
