Other NoteThe exact birthdate of John White is unknown. Born in Farnham, Surrey, he was educated at Winchester College. He graduated B.A. from New College, Oxford on 13 December 1529, proceeding M.A. on 23 March 1534. He was appointed headmaster of Winchester College in 1537. Ordained priest on 16 April 1541, he became rector of Cheriton, Hampshire in July 1543 and held several other benefices. He was elected to the see of Lincoln in April 1554, and subsequently Winchester in 1556. He proceeded D.D. on 1 October 1555. Bishop John White was committed to the Tower on 3 April 1559 for his opposition to reform. He was deprived after refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy. White died at South Warnborough, Hampshire on 12 January 1560, and was buried at Winchester Cathedral.
