Other NoteThe exact date of birth of John Thornton is not known. He was admitted sizar at Trinity College, Cambridge on 6 July 1641. He graduated B.A. in 1645/6 and proceeded M.A. in 1654. A nonconformist, he served as tutor and chaplain to William Russell, Duke of Bedford. Letters from Thornton to the Russell household survive at the Devonshire Collection Archives, Chatsworth (GB 2495 CS1/10). For his will, see The National Archives, PROB 11/480/339.
