DescriptionWritten in a secretary hand. Insertions and deletions are minimal. 'D. Fletcher' is written at the bottom of the sermon in a Gothic hand. If the sermon is written in his own hand, this would be another manuscript to add to the 'only known body of writings' which are possibly in his hand (St. John's College, Cambridge, MS I.30; see ODNB).
Source of DataEgerton Family Papers online (see link below); ODNB (Article: 9739); Hannah Yip.
Other NoteThe Egerton Family Papers online incorrectly states that the sermon was preached at 'suthering haye'. This sermon will be of interest to scholars studying the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, as Fletcher was actively involved in her trial and execution at Fotheringhay. See Peter E. McCullough, 'Out of Egypt: Richard Fletcher's Sermon before Elizabeth I after the Execution of Mary Queen of Scots', in Dissing Elizabeth: Negative Representations of Gloriana, ed. by Julia M. Walker (Durham, NC and London: Duke University Press, 1998), pp. 118-149.
