Other NoteWalter Balcanquhall was born in Edinburgh, one of the three sons of the Church of Scotland minister Walter Balcanquhall (1548/9-1616). His exact birth date is unknown. He attended the University of Edinburgh, graduating M.A. on 27 July 1609. He was awarded the degree of B.D. from Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1616. Subsequently, Balcanquhall became vicar of Harston and Waterbeach, both in Cambridgeshire, in 1615 and 1617, respectively. For a short time, he was master of the Savoy; however, he gave up this post in 1618 in order to attend the Synod of Dort. He took up the post again in 1621 and proceeded D.D. in the same year. In 1625, Balcanquhall became dean of Rochester and vicar of Goudhurst, Kent. Seven years later, he held the living of Adisham, Kent. Balcanquhall became dean of Durham in 1639. Shortly after, he held the vicarage of Boxley, Kent. He became the victim of sequestration during the English Civil Wars, and fled to Oxford, and afterwards to Chirk Castle, dying on Christmas Day in 1645.
