Other NoteBorn on June 20, 1642 at Moorhouse, Newsham, near Thirsk, Yorkshire. Son of William Hickes, a local landowning farmer, and Elizabeth, daughter of George Kay, the rector of nearby Topcliffe, Yorkshire. Attended a school in Thirsk and the free school of Northallerton, Yorkshire. Rejected his father’s loyalty to Cromwell and became a royalist under the influence of his schoolmaster at Northallerton, Thomas Smelt. Lived in Saltash, Cornwall, with his brother, John, as a merchant’s apprentice, in 1658. Entered St. John’s College, Oxford, in April 1659, and graduated BA in 1663. Migrated to Magdalen Hall, Oxford, in 1663, and graduated with a MA in 1665. Ordained as a priest in December 1666. Worked as a tutor at Lincoln College, 1665-1673, and was a fellow of the college, 1664-1680. He worked primarily on Anglo-Saxon language, literature, and philology. Visited France between 1673-1674. Rector of St Ebbe’s Church, Oxford, 1675. Proceeded BD at Oxford in 1675. Went to Edinburgh as the chaplain to John Maitland, the duke of Lauderdale, in 1676, and was offered a DD at St. Andrews. Created DD at Oxford in 1679. Prebendary of Worcester, 1680-83. Vicar of All Hallows, Barking, Essex, 1680-86. Possibly vicar of Wolverly, Worcestershire, 1680. Chaplain-in-ordinary to Charles II, 1681. Promoted to deanery of Worcester, 1683-91. Became rector of Alvechurch, Worcestershire, 1686. Wrote an Old English grammar manual, Institutiones grammaticae Anglo-Saxonicae et Moeso-Goethicae, published in 1689. Suspended as dean of Worcestor in 1689 for refusing to take the oath of allegiance to William and Mary and was deprived of his deanery in February 1691. Hickes wrote a claim of right to oppose his deprivation, took to hiding in London and was finally outlawed on 11 August, 1691. Became an important leader among the nonjurors. Went to St Germain in 1693 to obtain permission from James II to create suffragan bishops. Consecrated as suffragan bishop of Thetford in February 1694. From 1694-1698, stayed in various places such as Ambrosden, Gloucester Green, Ewithington, and finally settled in Ormond Street, London for the remainder of his life. During these years, Hickes wrote several controversial works in support of nonjuring principles. In 1703-5, he published a collaborative, authoritative work on the history of the English language and Germanic philology, linguistics and culture, the Thesaurus. In 1713, he consecrated three English and two Scottish nonjuring bishops to ensure the survival of the nonjuring church. Buried in St. Margaret’s churchyard, Westminster, on December 18, 1715.
