Other NoteAlexander Balloch Grosart (1827-1899) was a literary scholar and theologian. Born at Stirling on 18 June 1827, he was admitted to the University of Edinburgh in 1842, although he failed to take a degree. In 1851 he published an edition of the works of Robert Fergusson and entered the theological hall of the United Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh in the same year. He was licensed by the presbytery of Edinburgh in January 1856. On 29 October 1856, he was ordained at Kinross. In 1865 he moved to Liverpool, and then to Blackburn three years later. Equally celebrated as an Elizabethan and Jacobean scholar, it was during this time that he edited the works of Michael Bruce and Richard Gilpin, and in 1868 he brought out a bibliography of the writings of Richard Baxter. In August 1877, he received the honorary degree of LL.D. from the University of Edinburgh. The University of St Andrews also awarded him the degree of D.D. His ill health led him to resign from his position as minister of Blackburn in November 1892. He retired to Dublin in 1892, where he died on 16 March 1899.
