Other NoteThe son of William Wishart (1621-1692) the minister at Kineil and Christian, daughter of Richard Burne. He was educated at Edinburgh University, graduating MA in 1680. He also studied at the University of Utrecht, then returned to Scotland in 1684. He was imprisoned for denying James II's authority and then released after a year. He married Janet Murray, Daughter of Major William Murray of Touchadam, on 15 March 1691. He was called as minister to a meeting-house in Leith on 24 November 1687. He was ordained on 12 January 1688, although the presbytery did not confirm this until 6 January 1692, when he was appointed to South Leith parish church. This resulted in a violent reaction from the episcopal section of the parish. His Presbyterian supporters occupied the parish church by force, "breaking open the windows, breaking the locks off the doors, and putting on new ones'"(Fasti Scot. 3.136). During his ministry he was the moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was appointed to Tron Church, Edinburgh in September 1707. During his time at Tron he served as principal of Edinburgh University (1716-1728).
