Other NoteWilliam Dalrymple Maclagan was born in Edinburgh on 18 June 1826, the fifth son of Dr David Maclagan, described as 'physician to the forces', who distinguished himself as medical officer in the Peninsular War. William Dalrymple Maclagan attended Edinburgh High School and the University of Edinburgh. In 1846, he became a pupil in the law office of Messrs Douglas & Co. In April 1847, he joined the 51st regiment of Madras native infantry in India. Two years later, he retired, having attained the rank of lieutenant. He began to pursue a career in the Church, and was ordained deacon and priest in 1856-7, subsequently becoming curate of St Saviour's, Paddington. In 1857, Maclagan graduated B.A. from Peterhouse, Cambridge; he proceeded M.A. in 1860. From 1858 until 1860, he was curate at St Stephen's, Marylebone. He served as curate-in-charge at Enfield from 1865 to 1869; following which, he became rector of Newington, a post he held for six years. In 1875, he was instituted to the rectory of St Mary Abbots, Kensington. His ascendancy continued in the 1870s; he became prebend of St Paul's Cathedral, chaplain-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria, and bishop of Lichfield in 1878. Finally, he was consecrated archbishop of York on 15 September 1891. He died at his home at 15 Queen's Gate Place, London, on 19 September 1910. He is remembered today for his hymns.
