Contents NoteThis volume contains sermons, but the preacher cannot be identified certainly. The manuscript shows ownership marks by clergyman John Jackson (d. 1606) and antiquarian Ralph Thoresby (d. 1725), and on the fly-leaf is an annotation "A commonplace book cost - 2s. 6d." John Jackson (the father of John Jackson the younger?) signed the volume March 17, 1606. Thoresby's ownership information ['nunc (1717) e libris Rad: Thoresby Leodiensis' and above it "No. 306"]. John Jackson had a son, also John (d. 1647/8) whose dates would fit those of the sermons collected in this volume, although it is not certain that he is the author. At least one other manuscript from Thoresby's collection is associated with a John Jackson (of Marske, North Yorkshire), who could be the elder Jackson's son. Geographical connections between the elder Jackson (rector of Melsonby) and "Readmarshall" (the place associated with his name in this manuscript) also support the conclusion that the manuscript was owned by the elder Jackson, later by Thoresby, and that the sermons included are those of the younger Jackson, whose dates fall within the range of dated sermons here. The younger Jackson would have been too young to inscribe the book in 1606 but would have been old enough to write what appears to be a reference to Christmas 1634 on p. 113 of the second numbered sequence.
Material FeaturesThe binding is leather with blind tooling. The sermons are written in same hand throughout. Earlier sermons are squeezed onto the folios, and the handwriting is tiny. Later sermons are written by the same hand but with larger letter formations. Several folios are mutilated throughout the manuscript. At the end on unnumbered folios is "An Index of all the Texts." There are two sequences of sermons. The first is numbered 1-299; the second is 1-432.
